Whiskey Barrel Aged Coffee: What It Is, How It's Made & How to Brew It - Brewvana

Fall brings out cravings for deeper, cozier flavors in coffee. Our Whiskey Barrel Aged Coffee is one of the most-asked-about bags on the shelf. Here’s what barrel-aged coffee actually is, how ours is made, what it tastes like, and how to brew it at home.

What is barrel-aged coffee?

Barrel-aged coffee starts as green (unroasted) coffee beans. The beans rest inside a used spirits barrel before they’re roasted. Green coffee absorbs aromas from its surroundings, so the beans pick up character from the oak and the spirit that used to live in the barrel.

It isn’t flavored with syrup and it isn’t coffee mixed with whiskey. The barrel notes develop in the bean itself and come forward during roasting.

How Brewvana’s Whiskey Barrel Aged Coffee is made

  • The bean: a single-origin, specialty-grade Arabica from Guatemala
  • The barrel: a bourbon barrel
  • The rest: a full 30 days in the barrel before roasting
  • The roast: roasted to order after you buy. It never sits pre-roasted on a shelf.
  • What’s not in it: no artificial ingredients, no added sugar or sweeteners

Guatemalan coffee brings natural depth and body. The barrel adds a warm layer on top that you notice in the aroma first and then in the cup.

What does it taste like?

Expect the rich, rounded body of a Guatemalan coffee with warm, oaky, barrel-derived notes. A lot of people describe it as the coffee version of sitting by a fire. It works on its own and holds up well to a splash of cream.

If you like dessert-style cups, compare it with our flavored coffees. They taste sweeter and more playful, while barrel-aged coffee is deeper and more grown-up.

How to brew barrel-aged coffee

You can brew it any way you brew coffee. These methods show off the barrel character best:

  1. French press: a coarse grind with a 4-minute steep gives a full body that carries the oak notes. Try about 1 gram of coffee to 15 grams of water.
  2. Drip or pour-over: a standard grind gives a cleaner cup where the aroma really shines.
  3. Cold brew: a coarse grind steeped 12–18 hours in the fridge makes a smooth, low-acid concentrate with a mellow barrel finish. See our cold brew guide.

We grind every bag to order: Whole Bean, Standard, Coarse, or Espresso. Whole bean stays fresh longest if you grind at home.
